With this thought at its core, the Capacity Building Commission (CBC) successfully conducted the Mentor Orientation Session under the Karmayogi Mentorship Programme – Pilot, in collaboration with the Institute of Secretariat Training & Management (ISTM).

In his welcome address, Shri Jagdeep Gupta, Secretary, CBC, reflected on how mentoring has traditionally existed informally within the civil services during the probation period. This initiative seeks to build on this culture by bringing greater structure, continuity and purpose to the mentor-mentee relationship.

Dr. Alka Mittal, Member (Administration), CBC, set the context for the initiative, highlighting the importance of preparing mentors for their role and drawing upon the experience of structured mentorship in Public Sector Undertakings.

In her keynote address, Ms. Radha Chauhan, Chairperson, CBC, traced the programme's journey from the demand expressed during Departmental Summits and trainee feedback to its development as a structured pilot. Drawing from her own career, she reflected on the value of timely guidance and mentorship at key stages of an officer’s professional journey.

The orientation focused not only on understanding what mentoring is, but also on exploring how to mentor effectively.

Interactive sessions led by Shri Rajiv Manjhi, Director, ISTM and Shri Deepak Kumar Bist, Joint Director, ISTM explored the mentoring journey, mentor-mentee engagement, communication approaches and practical mentoring situations.

Shri Sudhir Krishna, IAS (Retd.) brought his extensive experience in public administration to a session on core mentoring skills and professional boundaries, while also sharing practical reflections from his own professional journey.

Bringing a PSU perspective, Shri Suresh Shetty, Director (HR), HPCL, shared how institutionalised mentorship at HPCL supports leadership development and succession planning, along with insights from his own experience of mentorship.

Shri Kunal Kapse, Team Lead, UNNATI, CBC, demonstrated the platform and its key features for supporting the mentoring journey.

The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Shri Sumeet Singh, Director, CBC.

Over the next six months, the pilot will test the mentoring framework, processes and technology-enabled mechanisms, generating valuable learnings for its potential wider scale-up.

A step towards making mentorship in public service more intentional, structured and meaningful.
