Rig Vedic polity shows the trace of earliest evidence of democratic form of government in human history. Being the earliest literature of India, Rig Veda reveals to us the kingship, state and, political organizations of India from the period between 1500 BCE to 1000 BCE. The idea of popular assemblies and institutions responsible for administrative duties can also be drawn from Rig Veda and its Samihita and Brahmana. The king kept his administrative system running effectively with the help of the popular assemblies called Sabha and Samiti. Both of these assemblies were the means by which a king was elected. This meant that the King was ultimately answerable to Sabha and Samiti. King was advised by Purohit (priest) in matter of governance.
The Early Vedic period is characterized by birth and structuring of Kingship/Monarchy in India, evolution and formation of Rig Vedic states including their political units, including the Assemblies and Councils – signifying advanced administrative design, with perhaps world’s first antecedents to democratic polity.
