Government of India Act of 1919

The objective of the act was gradual introduction of responsible government as declared by the British government on August 20, 1917.

The powers of central and provincial legislatures were further expanded. 

Bicameralism and direct elections were introduced for the first time in the country. Dyarchy, meaning double rule, was introduced in the provinces. The act provided for the establishment of a public service commission for recruiting civil servants. The concept of separate electorate was further expanded.
